I am trying to understand the metaphors in the following Bhagat Namdev Shabad using references from Gurbani. Professor Sahib Singh ji explains this Shabad in detail in his Bhagat Bani Steek - Part 3. Guru Nanak's shabad explains what "milk" is ... it is the amrit of Kirtan (Naam), milk is good deeds done with a pure conscience. Bhagat Namdev is asking God to accept his service. ਦੂਧੁ ਕਟੋਰੈ ਗਡਵੈ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
दूधु कटोरै गडवै पानी ॥
Ḏūḏẖ katorai gadvai pānī.
A cup of milk and a jug of water is brought to family god,
ਕਪਲ ਗਾਇ ਨਾਮੈ ਦੁਹਿ ਆਨੀ ॥੧॥
कपल गाइ नामै दुहि आनी ॥१॥
Kapal gāe nāmai ḏuhi ānī. ||1||
by Naam Dayv, after milking the brown cow. ||1||
ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਉ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੇ ਰਾਇ ॥
दूधु पीउ गोबिंदे राइ ॥
Ḏūḏẖ pīo gobinḏe rāe.
Please drink this milk, O my Sovereign Lord God.
ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਉ ਮੇਰੋ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
दूधु पीउ मेरो मनु पतीआइ ॥
Ḏūḏẖ pīo mero man paṯīāe.
Drink this milk and my mind will be happy.
ਨਾਹੀ ਤ ਘਰ ਕੋ ਬਾਪੁ ਰਿਸਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
नाही त घर को बापु रिसाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Nāhī ṯa gẖar ko bāp risāe. ||1|| rahāo.
Otherwise, my father will be angry with me."||1||Pause||
ਸੋੁਇਨ ਕਟੋਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਰੀ ॥
सोइन कटोरी अम्रित भरी ॥
Soin katorī amriṯ bẖarī.
Taking the golden cup, Naam Dayv filled it with the ambrosial milk,
ਲੈ ਨਾਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਧਰੀ ॥੨॥
लै नामै हरि आगै धरी ॥२॥
Lai nāmai har āgai ḏẖarī. ||2||
and placed it before the Lord. ||2||
ਏਕੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਬਸੈ ॥
एकु भगतु मेरे हिरदे बसै ॥
Ėk bẖagaṯ mere hirḏe basai.
This one devotee abides within my heart,
ਨਾਮੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਰਾਇਨੁ ਹਸੈ ॥੩॥
नामे देखि नराइनु हसै ॥३॥
Nāme ḏekẖ narāin hasai. ||3||
the Lord looked upon Naam Dayv and smiled. ||3||
ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਇ ਭਗਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
दूधु पीआइ भगतु घरि गइआ ॥
Ḏūḏẖ pīāe bẖagaṯ gẖar gaiā.
The Lord drank the milk, and the devotee returned home.
ਨਾਮੇ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥੩॥
नामे हरि का दरसनु भइआ ॥४॥३॥
Nāme har kā ḏarsan bẖaiā. ||4||3||
Thus did Naam Dayv come to receive the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||4||3||

आनीले कु्मभ भराईले ऊदक ठाकुर कउ इसनानु करउ ॥
Ānīle kumbẖ bẖarāīle ūḏak ṯẖākur kao isnān karao.
Bringing the pitcher, I fill it with water, to bathe the Lord.
ਬਇਆਲੀਸ ਲਖ ਜੀ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਤੇ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਭੈਲਾ ਕਾਇ ਕਰਉ ॥੧॥
बइआलीस लख जी जल महि होते बीठलु भैला काइ करउ ॥१॥
Baiālīs lakẖ jī jal mėh hoṯe bīṯẖal bẖailā kāe karao. ||1||
But 4.2 million species of beings are in the water - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||1||
ਜਤ੍ਰ ਜਾਉ ਤਤ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਭੈਲਾ ॥
जत्र जाउ तत बीठलु भैला ॥
Jaṯar jāo ṯaṯ bīṯẖal bẖailā.
Wherever I go, the Lord is there.
ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਕਰੇ ਸਦ ਕੇਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
महा अनंद करे सद केला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Mahā anand kare saḏ kelā. ||1|| rahāo.
He continually plays in supreme bliss. ||1||Pause||
ਆਨੀਲੇ ਫੂਲ ਪਰੋਈਲੇ ਮਾਲਾ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਉ ॥
आनीले फूल परोईले माला ठाकुर की हउ पूज करउ ॥
Ānīle fūl paroīle mālā ṯẖākur kī hao pūj karao.
I bring flowers to weave a garland, in worshipful adoration of the Lord.
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਬਾਸੁ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਭਵਰਹ ਬੀਠਲ ਭੈਲਾ ਕਾਇ ਕਰਉ ॥੨॥
पहिले बासु लई है भवरह बीठल भैला काइ करउ ॥२॥
Pahile bās laī hai bẖavrah bīṯẖal bẖailā kāe karao. ||2||
But the bumble bee has already sucked out the fragrance - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||2||
ਆਨੀਲੇ ਦੂਧੁ ਰੀਧਾਈਲੇ ਖੀਰੰ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਨੈਵੇਦੁ ਕਰਉ ॥
आनीले दूधु रीधाईले खीरं ठाकुर कउ नैवेदु करउ ॥
Ānīle ḏūḏẖ rīḏẖāīle kẖīraʼn ṯẖākur kao naiveḏ karao.
I carry milk and cook it to make pudding, with which to feed the Lord.
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੂਧੁ ਬਿਟਾਰਿਓ ਬਛਰੈ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਭੈਲਾ ਕਾਇ ਕਰਉ ॥੩॥
पहिले दूधु बिटारिओ बछरै बीठलु भैला काइ करउ ॥३॥
Pahile ḏūḏẖ bitārio bacẖẖrai bīṯẖal bẖailā kāe karao. ||3||
But the calf has already tasted the milk - how can I use it for the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny? ||3||
ਈਭੈ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਊਭੈ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਬੀਠਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਨਹੀ ॥
ईभै बीठलु ऊभै बीठलु बीठल बिनु संसारु नही ॥
Ībẖai bīṯẖal ūbẖai bīṯẖal bīṯẖal bin sansār nahī.
The Lord is here, the Lord is there; without the Lord, there is no world at all.
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬ ਮਹੀ ॥੪॥੨॥
थान थनंतरि नामा प्रणवै पूरि रहिओ तूं सरब मही ॥४॥२॥
Thān thananṯar nāmā paraṇvai pūr rahio ṯūʼn sarab mahī. ||4||2||
Prays Naam Dayv, O Lord, You are totally permeating and pervading all places and interspaces. ||4||2||
Guru Nanak on Seva with Milk

ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧੋਇ ਬੈਸਿ ਧੂਪੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਤਉ ਦੂਧੈ ਕਉ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥
भांडा धोइ बैसि धूपु देवहु तउ दूधै कउ जावहु ॥
Bẖāʼndā ḏẖoe bais ḏẖūp ḏevhu ṯao ḏūḏẖai kao jāvhu.
Wash the vessel, sit down and anoint it with fragrance; then, go out and get the milk.
ਦੂਧੁ ਕਰਮ ਫੁਨਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਜਮਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥
दूधु करम फुनि सुरति समाइणु होइ निरास जमावहु ॥१॥
Ḏūḏẖ karam fun suraṯ samāiṇ hoe nirās jamāvahu. ||1||
Add the rennet of clear consciousness to the milk of good deeds, and then, free of desire, let it curdle. ||1||
ਜਪਹੁ ਤ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
जपहु त एको नामा ॥
Japahu ṯa eko nāmā.
Chant the Name of the One Lord.
ਅਵਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
अवरि निराफल कामा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Avar nirāfal kāmā. ||1|| rahāo.
All other actions are fruitless. ||1||Pause||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਈਟੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਉ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
इहु मनु ईटी हाथि करहु फुनि नेत्रउ नीद न आवै ॥
Ih man ītī hāth karahu fun neṯarao nīḏ na āvai.
Let your mind be the handles, and then churn it, without sleeping.
ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਬ ਮਥੀਐ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥
रसना नामु जपहु तब मथीऐ इन बिधि अम्रितु पावहु ॥२॥
Rasnā nām japahu ṯab mathīai in biḏẖ amriṯ pāvhu. ||2||
If you chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, with your tongue, then the curd will be churned. In this way, the Ambrosial Nectar is obtained. ||2||
ਮਨੁ ਸੰਪਟੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਭਾਵਨ ਪਾਤੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
मनु स्मपटु जितु सत सरि नावणु भावन पाती त्रिपति करे ॥
Man sampat jiṯ saṯ sar nāvaṇ bẖāvan pāṯī ṯaripaṯ kare.
Wash your mind in the pool of Truth, and let it be the vessel of the Lord; let this be your offering to please Him.
ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੇ ਸੇਵੇ ਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਵਤੁ ਰਹੈ ॥੩॥
पूजा प्राण सेवकु जे सेवे इन्ह बिधि साहिबु रवतु रहै ॥३॥
Pūjā parāṇ sevak je seve inĥ biḏẖ sāhib ravaṯ rahai. ||3||
That humble servant who dedicates and offers his life, and who serves in this way, remains absorbed in his Lord and Master. ||3||
ਕਹਦੇ ਕਹਹਿ ਕਹੇ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
कहदे कहहि कहे कहि जावहि तुम सरि अवरु न कोई ॥
Kahḏe kahėh kahe kahi jāvėh ṯum sar avar na koī.
The speakers speak and speak and speak, and then they depart. There is no other to compare to You.
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਜੰਪੈ ਹਉ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
भगति हीणु नानकु जनु ज्मपै हउ सालाही सचा सोई ॥४॥१॥
Bẖagaṯ hīṇ Nānak jan jampai hao sālāhī sacẖā soī. ||4||1||
Servant Nanak, lacking devotion, humbly prays: may I sing the Praises of the True Lord. ||4||1||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
सतिगुर की सेवा सफल है जे को करे चितु लाइ ॥
Saṯgur kī sevā safal hai je ko kare cẖiṯ lāe.
Fruitful is service to the True Guru, if one does so with a sincere mind.
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
नामु पदारथु पाईऐ अचिंतु वसै मनि आइ ॥
Nām paḏārath pāīai acẖinṯ vasai man āe.
The treasure of the Naam, is obtained, and the mind comes to be free of anxiety.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
जनम मरन दुखु कटीऐ हउमै ममता जाइ ॥
Janam maran ḏukẖ katīai haumai mamṯā jāe.
The pains of birth and death are eradicated, and the mind is rid of egotism and self-conceit.
ਉਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
उतम पदवी पाईऐ सचे रहै समाइ ॥
Uṯam paḏvī pāīai sacẖe rahai samāe.
One achieves the ultimate state, and remains absorbed in the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
नानक पूरबि जिन कउ लिखिआ तिना सतिगुरु मिलिआ आइ ॥१॥
Nānak pūrab jin kao likẖiā ṯinā saṯgur miliā āe. ||1||
O Nanak, the True Guru comes and meets those who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||Guru Ramdas on Seva

ਕੋਈ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਵੇਚਾਈ ॥੧॥
कोई आणि मिलावै मेरा प्रीतमु पिआरा हउ तिसु पहि आपु वेचाई ॥१॥
Koī āṇ milāvai merā parīṯam piārā hao ṯis pėh āp vecẖāī. ||1||
If only someone would come, and lead me to meet my Darling Beloved; I would sell myself to him. ||1||
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਣ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥
दरसनु हरि देखण कै ताई ॥
Ḏarsan har ḏekẖaṇ kai ṯāī.
I long for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
क्रिपा करहि ता सतिगुरु मेलहि हरि हरि नामु धिआई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Kirpā karahi ṯā saṯgur melėh har har nām ḏẖiāī. ||1|| rahāo.
When the Lord shows Mercy unto me, then I meet the True Guru; I meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਅਰਾਧੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਭੀ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
जे सुखु देहि त तुझहि अराधी दुखि भी तुझै धिआई ॥२॥
Je sukẖ ḏėh ṯa ṯujẖėh arāḏẖī ḏukẖ bẖī ṯujẖai ḏẖiāī. ||2||
If You will bless me with happiness, then I will worship and adore You. Even in pain, I will meditate on You. ||2||
ਜੇ ਭੁਖ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਇਤ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੂਖ ਮਨਾਈ ॥੩॥
जे भुख देहि त इत ही राजा दुख विचि सूख मनाई ॥३॥
Je bẖukẖ ḏėh ṯa iṯ hī rājā ḏukẖ vicẖ sūkẖ manāī. ||3||
Even if You give me hunger, I will still feel satisfied; I am joyful, even in the midst of sorrow. ||3||
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਕਾਟਿ ਸਭੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਜਲਾਈ ॥੪॥
तनु मनु काटि काटि सभु अरपी विचि अगनी आपु जलाई ॥४॥
Ŧan man kāt kāt sabẖ arpī vicẖ agnī āp jalāī. ||4||
I would cut my mind and body apart into pieces, and offer them all to You; I would burn myself in fire. ||4||
ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਸੋ ਖਾਈ ॥੫॥
पखा फेरी पाणी ढोवा जो देवहि सो खाई ॥५॥
Pakẖā ferī pāṇī dẖovā jo ḏevėh so kẖāī. ||5||
I wave the fan over You, and carry water for You; whatever You give me, I take. ||5||
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਰੀਬੁ ਢਹਿ ਪਇਆ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੬॥
नानकु गरीबु ढहि पइआ दुआरै हरि मेलि लैहु वडिआई ॥६॥
Nānak garīb dẖėh paiā ḏuārai har mel laihu vadiāī. ||6||
Poor Nanak has fallen at the Lord's Door; please, O Lord, unite me with Yourself, by Your Glorious Greatness. ||6||
Guru Arjan on Seva
ਭਾਗਠੜੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਘਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
भागठड़े हरि संत तुम्हारे जिन्ह घरि धनु हरि नामा ॥
Bẖāgṯẖaṛe har sanṯ ṯumĥāre jinĥ gẖar ḏẖan har nāmā.
Your Saints are very fortunate; their homes are filled with the wealth of the Lord's Name.
ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਗਣੀ ਸੇਈ ਇਹ ਆਏ ਸਫਲ ਤਿਨਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥
परवाणु गणी सेई इह आए सफल तिना के कामा ॥१॥
Parvāṇ gaṇī seī ih āe safal ṯinā ke kāmā. ||1||
Their birth is approved, and their actions are fruitful. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
मेरे राम हरि जन कै हउ बलि जाई ॥
Mere rām har jan kai hao bal jāī.
O my Lord, I am a sacrifice to the humble servants of the Lord.
ਕੇਸਾ ਕਾ ਕਰਿ ਚਵਰੁ ਢੁਲਾਵਾ ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
केसा का करि चवरु ढुलावा चरण धूड़ि मुखि लाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Kesā kā kar cẖavar dẖulāvā cẖaraṇ ḏẖūṛ mukẖ lāī. ||1|| rahāo.
I make my hair into a fan, and wave it over them; I apply the dust of their feet to my face. ||1||Pause||
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਹਹੂ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਆਏ ॥
जनम मरण दुहहू महि नाही जन परउपकारी आए ॥
Janam maraṇ ḏuhhū mėh nāhī jan parupkārī āe.
Those generous, humble beings are above both birth and death.
ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਲੈਨਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੨॥
जीअ दानु दे भगती लाइनि हरि सिउ लैनि मिलाए ॥२॥
Jīa ḏān ḏe bẖagṯī lāin har sio lain milāe. ||2||
They give the gift of the soul, and practice devotional worship; they inspire others to meet the Lord. ||2||
ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
सचा अमरु सची पातिसाही सचे सेती राते ॥
Sacẖā amar sacẖī pāṯisāhī sacẖe seṯī rāṯe.
True are their commands, and true are their empires; they are attuned to the Truth.
ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਸੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਾਤੇ ॥੩॥
सचा सुखु सची वडिआई जिस के से तिनि जाते ॥३॥
Sacẖā sukẖ sacẖī vadiāī jis ke se ṯin jāṯe. ||3||
True is their happiness, and true is their greatness. They know the Lord, to whom they belong. ||3||
ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਪੀਸਣੁ ਪੀਸਿ ਕਮਾਵਾ ॥
पखा फेरी पाणी ढोवा हरि जन कै पीसणु पीसि कमावा ॥
Pakẖā ferī pāṇī dẖovā har jan kai pīsaṇ pīs kamāvā.
I wave the fan over them, carry water for them, and grind corn for the humble servants of the Lord.

नानक की प्रभ पासि बेनंती तेरे जन देखणु पावा ॥४॥७॥५४॥
Nānak kī parabẖ pās benanṯī ṯere jan ḏekẖaṇ pāvā. ||4||7||54||
