Jagjit Singh teaching raag Yaman Kalyan in the following video. Shows the two 'chaals' of yaman kalyan. Notice how he repeats the same phrases to teach and also practice himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcU_5T1vlQw
Beautiful rendition of 'Jab Deep Jale' with characeteristically including intricate murki's of Yesudas, and South Indian percussion including Mridangam and matka. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovhrc9WAN0k
Bhimpalasi With a Vadi 'Ma' Bhimpalasi has a very different mood from Dhanasri, however, the notes are exactly the same. When the 'Ma' is weaker, the mood and ambience is very similar. The drut portion of the following recording of Ashwini Bhide starts at 5:37' and is a beautiful composition set in Ek Taal:
[Updated 2017] As of 2007, there were three compilations of Guru Granth Sahib's raags. Links to the compilations are given below. I use Dr. Gurnam Singh's compilation the most because of my belief in the depth of research done by Dr. Gurnam Singh, completeness of the compilation (62 raags versus 31), and also because of his gayaki. However, it is apt to say that all the compilations were made with a lot of love and devotion.
This was my first attempt at Maru Bihaag at the Hayward Gurudwara:
I have been looking to compose for Guru Tegh Bahadur's Maru shabad, 'Ab Main Kahaa Karoon Ri Mai,' for which the mood of Maru Bihag is quite appropriate in my opinion. I will talk about this shabad in a different post, and here I present some of the research I did on the Maru Bihag.
Maru Bihag
Maru Bihaag is popular contemporarily among Indian classical enthusiasts. Kirtan in Maru Bihag:
The defining characteristics of Maru Bihag are evident clearly in two popular modern day compositions, 'Rasiya Ho Na Ja' popular among several classical indian components of modern time and Lata and Mohd. Rafi's memorable 'Tum To Pyaar Ho.' Following are the links to these compositions:
June 6, 2008 Update Here is a Maru Bihag rendiion by Begum Parveen Sultana. Notice in the swar vistar at 1:50: .Dha .Ni Sa ma Ga, Ma Ga Re Sa ... all the way to mandra Sa! Use of tevraa Ma after shudha ma and Ga is subliminal.
In September 2007 before a trip to Boston I collected Raag Sree Raag bandishes and came up with 12 recordings. Enjoy these recordings, especially one by Bhai Sarabjeet Singh which is from a live recording at the Darbar Sahib and is a good rendition.
We celebrated our son's 4th birthday earlier this month and we had Kirtan at our house. I have been working on a Kalyan composition for Prabh Keejai Kirpaa Nidhaan for 2 or 3 years now, but this was the first time singing this shabad in front of the sangat.
Prabh Keejai Kirpa Nidhan Hum Har Gun Gavenge Hau Tumri Karaon Nit Aas Prabh Mohe Kab Gal Lavenge
Lord have mercy on me Let me sing your praise Night and day I yearn for thee When will you embrace?
I dont have a recording of the kirtan that I did then; I will try to post it at a later point. I did find 1 or 2 other compositions in Kalyan for this shabad.
Following is a compilation of shabads, grouped by raags, which was made by made by Sardar Santokh Singh ji from Malaysia as of July 2007. This compilation was started by Santokh ji as part of a discussion thread, "Kirtan with English sub-titles," on sikhphilosophy.net.
